Talk:Water fluoridation

From Silicopedia

Article contradicts itself on when the U.S. lowered its fluoride recommendation to 0.7 mg/L — 2011 in one section, April 2015 in another

The article gives two different dates for the same event — the U.S. lowering its recommended fluoride level to 0.7 mg/L:

  • The Target level subsection says HHS and the EPA "lowered the recommended level of fluoride to 0.7 mg/L" in 2011.
  • The Fluorosis subsection says this change happened in April 2015.
  • The lead agrees with the latter, saying the level "has been 0.7 mg/L since 2015".

Historically, HHS proposed the 0.7 mg/L recommendation in January 2011 and finalized it in April 2015 — but the article as written does not reconcile this. The Target level sentence treats 2011 as the date the level was actually "lowered", which flatly contradicts the lead and the Fluorosis section.

Proposed fix: rewrite the Target level sentence to distinguish the 2011 proposal from the 2015 final recommendation, e.g.:

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed lowering the recommended level of fluoride to 0.7 mg/L; this recommendation was finalized by the U.S. Public Health Service in April 2015.
