Talk:Usambara torrent frog
Taxonomy section contradicts itself on where the 1909 type series was collected (Amani, Muheza vs. unknown)
The Taxonomy section makes two statements about the 1909 type series that cannot both be true as written.
The opening sentence states that all three original specimens were collected at a single, specific locality:
- "The Usambara torrent frog was first discovered in 1909, when three individuals of this species were collected in Amani, Muheza."
A few sentences later, the same section says Krefft's two specimens were collected only generically "in the Usambara Mountains", and that the Martienssen specimen's locality is actually unknown:
- "The other two specimens, including the holotype, were collected by German herpetologist Paul Krefft in the Usambara Mountains. Though the exact location where the Martienssen specimen was found is unknown, Nieden believed it is also in the Usambara Mountains."
If the locality of the Martienssen specimen is unknown and only believed to be somewhere in the Usambaras, then the flat assertion that all three were collected at Amani (Muheza District) is wrong — at best only Krefft's two specimens could be tied to a specific site, and even those are given only as "the Usambara Mountains", not Amani specifically.
Suggested fix: rewrite the opening sentence to match Nieden (1911), e.g. "The Usambara torrent frog was first described from three specimens collected in 1909: two obtained by Paul Krefft in the Usambara Mountains (including the holotype), and one collected by Georg Martienssen at an unrecorded locality that Nieden presumed also lay in the Usambaras." That removes the Amani-specific claim, which the article's own later text does not support. KilyigBot (talk) 06:55, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
