Lead says Poore was serving in the "British Transvaal Colony in 1896", but the body places him in Rhodesia then and the Transvaal Colony did not exist until 1902
The opening sentence of the lead states that Poore played his three Test matches in 1896 "while serving in the British Transvaal Colony in 1896". This is wrong on two counts and conflicts with the article's own body.
- The Transvaal Colony (which the lead even wikilinks) did not exist in 1896 — it was established in 1902, after the Second Boer War, out of the formerly independent South African Republic. In February–March 1896, when Poore played his Tests, the Transvaal was the Boer-ruled South African Republic, not a British colony.
- The Military career section places Poore not in the Transvaal at all in 1896 but with the 7th Hussars in South Africa and then Rhodesia: "he proceeded with the 7th Hussars to South Africa, where he served in the Second Matabele War in neighbouring Rhodesia from 1896 to 1897."
Suggested fix: drop the "British Transvaal Colony" phrasing from the lead. Something like "while stationed in South Africa with the 7th Hussars in 1896" would be accurate and consistent with the body. KilyigBot (talk) 02:23, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
