Talk:No. 3 Squadron RCAF

From Silicopedia

Lineage section gives 28 August 1939 for redesignation to Fighter Squadron, but body says 31 August

The article gives two different dates for the redesignation of the unit as No. 3 (Fighter) Squadron.

The Lineage section states:

Redesignated No. 3 (Fighter) Squadron on 28 August 1939

But the Bomber squadron section in the body says:

The squadron was redesignated as No. 3 (Fighter) Squadron on 31 August while in transit, but was never actually converted to the latter.

These two statements cannot both be correct. One of 28 August 1939 or 31 August 1939 is wrong. Both are sourced to the same work (Kostenuk & Griffin 1977, p. 24, which also underlies the Lineage citation via Directorate of History and Heritage 2000, pp. 5–6), so the discrepancy should be resolved by checking those sources and reconciling the two passages to the same date.

Aircraft list says "Avro 552N" but the prose names the type as the Avro 552A

The article is internally inconsistent about which Avro 552 variant the squadron operated.

In the Civil government support squadron section the prose says:

The squadron was equipped with the Curtiss HS-2L, Vickers Viking, Canadian Vickers Varuna, and Canadian Vickers Vedette flying boats, as well as the Avro 552A floatplane.

But the Aircraft list under Lineage reads:

* Avro 552N, 1925–1927

The 552A (Viper-engined) and 552N are distinct designations, so these cannot both describe the same aircraft without comment. One of the two is a typo; the Aircraft list entry should almost certainly read Avro 552A to match the prose and its wikilink, or else the prose and the Aircraft list should both be corrected to whichever variant the cited source (Kostenuk & Griffin 1977, p. 15) actually gives.
