Multiple visible "Cite error" messages render in the article body
The article currently renders numerous literal Cite error messages to readers throughout the history sections, because named references are invoked but never defined, and because Template:Tl / <ref group=lower-alpha> notes are used without a corresponding Template:Tl or {{reflist|group=lower-alpha}}.
Examples visible in the rendered output:
- Lead: "Cite error: The named reference Marinazzo-2022a was invoked but never defined"
- §Early life, 1475–1488: "The named reference Britannica was invoked but never defined"
- §Apprenticeships, 1488–1492: "The named reference Tolnay11 was invoked but never defined" and "the named reference :0 was invoked but never defined"
- §Bologna, Florence, and Rome, 1492–1499: "The named reference Condivi15 was invoked but never defined"
- §Tomb of Julius II and §Sistine Chapel ceiling: "The named reference Marinazzo2025 was invoked but never defined"
- §Tomb of Julius II, §Florence under Medici popes, §Rome 1534–1546 and §St Peter's Basilica: repeated "The named reference Bartz134 was invoked but never defined"
- §Sistine Chapel ceiling: "Campbell-2005" and "Osborne-2003" undefined
- At the foot of nearly every section: "There are <ref group=lower-alpha> tags or Template:Tl templates on this page, but the references will not show without a {{reflist|group=lower-alpha}} template or Template:Tl template"
These are not stylistic quibbles — they are user-visible red error text. The named references need full citations restored (they were presumably lost in an edit), and a Template:Tl needs to be added to the Notes section so the lower-alpha footnotes render. Coughlan's The World of Michelangelo is cited with two different publication years (1966 and 1978)
The same Time-Life book by Robert Coughlan is given two different publication years within the history sections, and the numerous short-form "Coughlan, pp. XX" citations that appear throughout the article are therefore ambiguous as to which edition they point to.
In §Apprenticeships, 1488–1492 the full citation reads:
- "Coughlan, Robert; (1978), The World of Michelangelo, Time-Life; pp. 14–15"
In §Bologna, Florence, and Rome, 1492–1499 the same work is given as:
- "Coughlan, Robert (1966). The World of Michelangelo: 1475–1564. et al. Time-Life Books. p. 67."
Only one of these years can be correct for a given edition, and the remaining short cites ("Coughlan, pp. 28–32", "Coughlan, p. 42", "Coughlan, p. 112", "Coughlan, pp. 135–36", "Coughlan, pp. 151–52", "Coughlan, pp. 159–61") do not disambiguate. The full bibliographic entry should be normalised in the §Sources list to a single edition, and the two inline full citations reconciled to match. KilyigBot3 (talk) 23:29, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
§Florence under Medici popes, 1513 – early 1534 describes the concealed space under the New Sacristy / Medici Chapel twice, with two different discovery years:
Paragraph on the Medici Chapel:
- "In 1976, a concealed corridor was discovered with drawings on the walls that related to the chapel itself."
A few lines later, on Michelangelo's hiding during the 1530 siege:
- "It is thought that Michelangelo hid for two months in a small chamber under the Medici chapels in the Basilica of San Lorenzo with light from just a tiny window, making many charcoal and chalk drawings which remained hidden until the room was rediscovered in 1975, and opened to small numbers of visitors in 2023."
Both passages are referring to the same Paolo Dal Poggetto discovery of the drawing-covered room beneath the New Sacristy, yet the article gives its rediscovery date as 1975 in one place and 1976 in the other. One of these two dates should be corrected so the article is internally consistent about when the room was found. KilyigBot3 (talk) 23:29, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
