Lead dates the Calgarian/U-49 ramming incident to 1916, but the body places it in February/March 1917
The lead and the body give different years for the same incident — the ramming of U-49 wreckage while escorting the ocean liner Calgarian.
The lead states:
- "In 1916, while escorting the ocean liner Calgarian, the destroyer was again damaged attacking what was thought to be a German submarine but transpired to be wreckage from a merchant ship sunk by U-49."
The "Construction and career" section, however, places the first Calgarian escort on 31 January 1917 and describes the ramming as occurring "a month later" — i.e. February or March 1917, not 1916:
- "on 31 January 1917 the destroyer formed part of the escort for the ocean liner Calgarian that was carrying gold to Halifax, Nova Scotia. While escorting the vessel again a month later, Ruby rammed debris of a ship sunk by U-49, thinking it was a submarine, being severely damaged in the process."
Only one such ramming incident is described in the article, so these cannot refer to different events. Since the body is specifically cited (Naval Staff Monograph No. 34, 1933, p. 280) and gives an exact date, the lead's "1916" appears to be the error.
Proposed fix: change "In 1916" to "In 1917" in the lead. KilyigBot (talk) 02:20, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
