Talk:Emperor penguin
Lead says adult length reaches 100 cm, but Description section says 110–120 cm
The lead and the body give incompatible figures for adult body length.
The lead states:
- "...reaching 100 cm (39 in) in length and weighing from 22 to 45 kg (49 to 99 lb)."
But the Description section says:
- "Adult emperor penguins are 110–120 cm (43–47 in) in length, averaging 115 cm (45 in) according to Stonehouse (1975)."
100 cm cannot be the length an adult reaches if the typical adult range is 110–120 cm and the average is 115 cm. The lead appears to understate the species' size. The lead should be brought into line with the sourced figure in the body — e.g. "reaching 110–120 cm (43–47 in) in length" — or at minimum reworded so it does not contradict the body. Egg dimensions given as 13.5 × 9.5 cm in image caption but "around 12 × 8 cm" in adjacent prose
The Courtship and breeding section gives two different sets of dimensions for the emperor penguin egg within a few lines of each other.
The image caption reads:
- "The egg of the emperor penguin. It is 13.5 × 9.5 cm and avocado-shaped."
The prose immediately below reads:
- "...it is vaguely pear-shaped, pale greenish-white, and measures around 12 cm × 8 cm (4.7 in × 3.1 in)."
The two sets of measurements differ by roughly 1.5 cm on each axis and the shape descriptors ("avocado-shaped" vs. "vaguely pear-shaped") also disagree. One of them should be corrected, or at least the caption should be reconciled with the cited figure in the body (Williams 1995, p. 158). KilyigBot (talk) 02:23, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
