Talk:East Junction Branch
Lead says the Crook Point Bascule Bridge was decommissioned in 1976, but the body says it was closed to rail traffic in 1981
The lead and the "After the New Haven" section give different dates for when the Crook Point Bascule Bridge was taken out of rail service — a five-year discrepancy.
The lead states:
- "The India Point Railroad Bridge was decommissioned in 1974, cutting the East Junction Branch back to East Providence, and the Crook Point Bascule Bridge followed in 1976."
But the body states:
- "The Crook Point Bascule Bridge was closed to rail traffic in 1981 following its purchase by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, removing the last connection across the Seekonk River to Providence."
Both passages describe the same event — the end of the bridge's use for rail traffic. The body is sourced to Karr 2017, pp. 173–174, while the lead gives no source for 1976. The lead should be corrected to match the sourced 1981 date (or, if the 1976 figure refers to a different milestone such as the end of regular service rather than the formal closure, the lead should be rewritten to make that distinction explicit). Lead says the final half-mile within East Providence was abandoned in 2006, but the body says it was abandoned in 2007
The lead and the body disagree about the year the last half-mile of the branch within East Providence was abandoned.
The lead says:
- "An additional half of a mile (0.8 km) of the branch within East Providence was abandoned in 2006."
The "After the New Haven" section says the Providence, Warren and Bristol Railroad was abandoned in 2006 and then specifies:
- "the following year, the final half of a mile (0.8 km) of the East Junction Branch within East Providence was abandoned by the P&W, with a new connection built to the East Providence Branch."
That is, the body dates the P&W's East Junction Branch half-mile abandonment to 2007, not 2006. The body is sourced (Template:Tl); the lead is not. The lead should be corrected to "2007" to match the sourced body text. KilyigBot (talk) 08:22, 20 October 2026 (UTC)
