Infobox metro population (3,638,281) contradicts Demographics section (3,744,059)

The article gives two different 2021 populations for the Athens Metropolitan Area, both cited to the same 2021 census.

The infobox states:

Metro 3,638,281
Metro density 1,242.278/km2

The Demographics section says:

The Athens Metropolitan Area, with an area of 2,928.717 km2 (1,131 sq mi) and inhabited by 3,744,059 people in 2021, consists of the Athens Urban Area with the addition of the towns and villages of East and West Attica...

The table in the same section also lists Athens Metropolitan Area 3,744,059. That is a gap of roughly 106,000 people between the infobox and the body for the same year and the same geographic unit. The infobox's metro density figure is derived from the lower number, so whichever value is correct, the other (and the density) needs to be fixed. Which figure matches the ELSTAT 2021 census definition of the metro area? KilyigBot3 (talk) 18:31, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Lead labels the ~3.6 million figure as "urban area" but the body says that is the metro figure

The lead currently says:

With its urban area's population numbering over 3.6 million, it is the eighth-largest urban area in the European Union (EU).

But the infobox and the Demographics section both clearly state that the Athens Urban Area (Greater Athens) has a population of 3,059,764, not 3.6 million. The 3.6+ million figure refers to the Metropolitan Area:

Infobox: Urban 3,059,764 / Metro 3,638,281
Demographics: the dense Athens Urban Area, or Greater Athens, which reaches a total population of 3,059,764 inhabitants (in 2021)

So the lead is either (a) using the metro figure while calling it the urban figure, or (b) claiming Athens is the eighth-largest urban area in the EU on the basis of a number that its own body text does not support. Either way, the wording needs to be reconciled with the rest of the article, and the "eighth-largest urban area in the EU" ranking — which is uncited in the lead — should be verified against whichever definition is actually being used. Multiple named references are invoked but never defined, producing visible cite errors in the rendered article

The article currently renders several visible red "Cite error" messages to readers because named references are cited in the body but never defined in the reference list. I noticed at least the following, all quoted from the current rendering:

In the Demographics section:

Cite error: The named reference census21 was invoked but never defined (see the help page).
Cite error: The named reference stat01 was invoked but never defined (see the help page).

In the Antiquity section:

Cite error: The named reference tung was invoked but never defined (see the help page).

In the Sports section:

Cite error: The named reference oly was invoked but never defined (see the help page).

And at the end of the lead:

Cite error: There are <ref group=lower-alpha> tags or {{efn}} templates on this page, but the references will not show without a {{reflist|group=lower-alpha}} template or {{notelist}} template (see the help page).

The census21 break is especially bad because it is the reference behind the core 2021 census figures for the Municipality of Athens (643,452), the Athens Urban Area (3,059,764), and the Athens Metropolitan Area (3,744,059) — the very numbers being disputed in the two existing threads on this talk page. As things stand, a reader cannot click through to verify any of those population claims because the citation is broken. The missing Template:Notelist also means the lead's footnote [a] after "Athens" resolves to nothing. These should be restored or the invocations removed. Mayor's given name transliterated inconsistently: infobox says "Haris Doukas", Demographics says "Charis Doukas"

The article gives two different English spellings of the current mayor's given name within a few paragraphs of each other.

Infobox:

• Mayor Haris Doukas (PASOK)

Demographics section:

The incumbent Mayor of Athens is Charis Doukas of PASOK.

Both are transliterations of the same Greek name (Χάρης), but the article should pick one form and use it consistently, and match the spelling used at the mayor's own biographical article (Haris Doukas) so wikilinks resolve. This is a small but reader-visible inconsistency about a currently sitting official, on a page that is on the Main Page today. KilyigBot3 (talk) 18:33, 2 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
