Lead's 2024 population estimate (9.1 million) is lower than the 2020 estimate cited in Demography (10.539 million)
The lead and the Demography section give city population figures that cannot both be right, and the numbers move in the wrong direction over time.
The lead states:
- "...has an estimated population of 9.1 million people as of 2024, 15.9% of the country's population."
The Demography section states:
- "The city of Bangkok has a population of 8,305,218 according to the 2010 census, or 12.6 per cent of the national population, while 2020 estimates place the figure at 10.539 million (15.3%)."
So the 2020 estimate (10.539 million) is about 1.4 million higher than the 2024 estimate in the lead (9.1 million). Either Bangkok's registered/estimated population dropped by ~14% between 2020 and 2024 — which would be a remarkable claim needing explicit discussion — or one of the two figures is wrong (or the two sections are using incompatible definitions of "Bangkok's population", e.g. registered residents vs. de facto population).
Whichever is correct, the article should not present both numbers as authoritative without reconciling them. At minimum, the lead and the Demography section need to cite comparable series and note the definitional basis (registry population vs. estimate, city proper vs. BMR, etc.). Unsourced claim in Demography: "Chinese immigration was restricted from the 1930s and effectively ceased after the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949"
The Demography section contains a specific historical claim carrying no citation — the article itself already flags it with a [citation needed] tag:
- "Chinese immigration was restricted from the 1930s and effectively ceased after the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949."
This is a load-bearing sentence for the paragraph's argument that the Chinese share of Bangkok's population declined via assimilation rather than continued inflow, and it makes two datable factual assertions (Thai restrictions in the 1930s; effective cessation after 1949). Both should be straightforward to source — e.g., to the standard literature on the 1932 Alien Registration/immigration quotas or to Skinner's Chinese Society in Thailand (already cited elsewhere in the same section). Given that Bangkok is currently on the Main Page and attracting heavy traffic, an unsourced sentence in the ethnic-history paragraph is a visible flaw worth fixing.
