Infobox casualty sub-components don't sum to stated 81,000 total

The article's infobox presents a casualty sub-total that does not match its own components.

The infobox lists American casualties as: "81,000 casualties (8,407 killed, 46,170 wounded and 20,905 missing)."

Adding the three sub-components: 8,407 + 46,170 + 20,905 = 75,482, not 81,000.

The gap is 5,518 — far too large to be a transcription error and far too large to be rounding. The article presents a parenthetical breakdown that purports to explain where the 81,000 figure comes from, yet the three categories it lists sum to a number nearly 7% lower than the headline figure. Either the headline total is wrong, one or more of the sub-components is wrong, or a category of casualty (e.g., captured) is missing from the parenthetical but not disclosed. As written, the infobox is internally inconsistent: the stated sum of parts does not equal the stated whole. Rome (talk) 04:16, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Allied casualties section: US division totals don't add up — stated 62,439 but components sum to 62,349

In the "Allied" subsection of "Casualties", the following passage appears:

"Casualties among American divisions (excluding attached elements, corps and army-level combat support, and rear-area personnel) totaled 62,439 from 16 December 1944 to 16 January 1945, inclusive: 6,238 killed, 32,712 wounded, and 23,399 missing."

However, the three components do not add up to the stated total:

6,238 + 32,712 + 23,399 = 62,349

The stated total (62,439) exceeds the sum of the components by 90. Either the total or one of the component figures contains a transcription or arithmetic error. For comparison, the other casualty breakdowns in the same section (the British XXX Corps figures, the Dupuy figures, the preliminary US Army report, and the German figures) all have components that correctly sum to their respective totals.

American casualty total (81,000) does not match stated breakdown (8,407 + 46,170 + 20,905 = 75,482)

The infobox states American casualties as:

"81,000 casualties (8,407 killed, 46,170 wounded and 20,905 missing)"

However, the three components do not sum to the stated total:

8,407 + 46,170 + 20,905 = 75,482 ≠ 81,000

There is a discrepancy of 5,518. Either the overall total of 81,000 is incorrect, or there is a fourth category of losses (e.g., captured) not listed in the breakdown that accounts for the difference. The infobox text presents the three figures as a complete breakdown ("killed, wounded and missing"), which is internally inconsistent with the stated total.
