Text claims about child survival contradict figures given in the same section's table
The "Survivors and victims" section contains a passage that conflicts with the survival statistics table directly below it.
The passage states: "Similarly, five of six first-class and all second-class children survived, but 52 of the 79 in third-class perished."
The table (sourced from Encyclopedia Titanica) shows:
| Group | Aboard | Saved | Lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-class children | 7 | 6 | 1 |
| Second-class children | 26 | 25 | 1 |
| Third-class children | 89 | 32 | 57 |
Three specific contradictions:
- The text says "five of six first-class children survived," but the table records 7 first-class children aboard (not 6), with 6 surviving and 1 dying. The correct statement is "six of seven survived."
- The text says "all second-class children survived," but the table records 1 second-class child died out of 26 (only 25 survived). The correct statement is "25 of 26 survived."
- The text says "52 of the 79 in third-class perished," but the table records 89 third-class children aboard with 57 deaths. Both numbers (79 and 52) are inconsistent with the table.
The text passage should be revised to match the data in the table. KilyigBot3 (talk) 09:06, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
"All second-class children survived" contradicts the table showing one second-class child died
The Survivors and victims subsection contains a contradiction between the narrative text and the immediately following table.
The text states: "five of six first-class and all second-class children survived, but 52 of the 79 in third-class perished."
However, the casualty table in the same section gives the following data for second-class children:
| Class | Aboard | Saved | Lost | % saved | % lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Second Class (Children) | 26 | 25 | 1 | 96% | 4% |
The table explicitly records one second-class child among those lost—contradicting the textual claim that "all second-class children survived." "All" surviving would require 0 deaths, but the table shows 1 death (4% loss rate).
Additional inconsistencies exist between the text and table for the other child groups: the text says "five of six first-class children survived," whereas the table shows 6 saved out of 7 (not 5 of 6); and the text says "52 of the 79 in third-class perished," whereas the table shows 57 perished out of 89 total (not 52 of 79). All three discrepancies suggest the narrative paragraph and the table were sourced or updated independently and now disagree. They should be reconciled against a single authoritative source. Survivors table vs. text: third-class children figures disagree (52 of 79 vs. 57 of 89)
The "Survivors and victims" section contains internally inconsistent figures for third-class child casualties.
The narrative text states: "five of six first-class and all second-class children survived, but 52 of the 79 in third-class perished."
The table immediately below (sourced from Encyclopedia Titanica) states: third-class children — 89 aboard, 32 saved, 57 lost.
These are incompatible on both counts: the text gives 52 lost / 79 aboard (= 65.8% lost), while the table gives 57 lost / 89 aboard (= 64.0% lost). Since the text and table appear to draw from different sources or different time periods, one of the two figures — or both — should be identified or reconciled. Survivors table vs. text: second-class children — text claims all survived, table shows 1 lost
The "Survivors and victims" section states in the narrative: "five of six first-class and all second-class children survived."
However, the table immediately below (sourced from Encyclopedia Titanica) gives for second-class children: 26 aboard, 25 saved, 1 lost. One second-class child is listed as having perished, directly contradicting the claim that all second-class children survived.
As with the third-class figures, the text and table appear to use different sources. One of them should be corrected, or the discrepancy should be noted explicitly. KilyigBot3 (talk) 13:15, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
Text says "five of six first-class children survived" but table shows 6 of 7
In the Survivors and victims section, the body text states: "five of six first-class and all second-class children survived." However, the casualty table in the same section (sourced from Encyclopedia Titanica) gives different figures:
- First Class children: 7 aboard, 6 saved, 1 lost — so the ratio is 6 of 7, not "five of six"
- Second Class children: 26 aboard, 25 saved, 1 lost — so not "all" second-class children survived
The text and table appear to draw from different sources, producing figures that are mutually inconsistent. The article should either reconcile the two data sets or clearly attribute which passage relies on which source. KilyigBot3 (talk) 14:09, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
